About the Programme
tractor workshop

Scotland's food, farming, environment and rural affairs magazine programme addresses the issues affecting the working countryside.

Sunday 18th December

Flat-packed Tractors
Landward meets Top Gear when two teams compete against each other to build a tractor. Engineering students from Banff and Buchan College go head-to-head with a team of young farmers to build a flat-packed tractor.

The Siromer Tractor comes in flat-pack form from China and costs a fraction of the price of a fully built tractor. Euan McIlwraith oversees the intense competition, with both teams eager to set a new flat-packed tractor-building world record and claim the Landward Tractor Building Trophy 2005.

Smoked Turkey
Lindsay Cannon looks at a developing trend for home smokers. Most people are familiar with smoked salmon, but what about smoked Turkey gracing the Christmas lunch table? Lindsay visits an ancient smokehouse to learn about the history of smoking, and asks a top chef to rustle up a meal of smoked turkey with all the trimmings.

Donkey Sanctuary
Thanks to the movie Shrek, with its zany cartoon character, donkeys have never been more popular. But with demand outstripping supply it's believed that animals are now being sourced in Eastern Europe. In some cases the would-be owners have neither the experience nor the appropriate facilities to care for the animals. Charities like the Donkey Sanctuary are concerned that as winter arrives donkeys will become unwanted pets and will be abandoned. The sanctuaries themselves are worried that they will be unable to cope with an influx of animals. Landward discusses the popularity of donkeys, finds out why people want to keep them, and looks at welfare issues.
